These “Quick Sayings” were written a long time ago. I’m posting them here for the memories. I have included the dates so you can see when they were written. I don’t know where they came from, either if they were something I may have heard or read, or if they just came out of the recesses of my mind.

Reality is the figment of someone’s overactive imagination. We are just caught in the middle.

November 2, 1993

Reality is an illusion, and illusions are reality.

Life is short. Death is forever.

Intelligence is a birthright. Stupidity is learned.

Life is like a broken record that keeps playing over and over.

Children are teddy bears. Old men are grizzly bears.

The unknown dwarves: Sickly, Wheezy, Queasy, Crude, Crabby, Horny and Corny.

Life is like a bird; the thrill of flight, and the mess on your car.

“True freedom is in total bondage.” — A masochist’s proverb.

“Surgeon General’s Warning — Smoking may cause spontaneous combustion.” — The seldom seen cigarette warning.

Life is like a cherry. It tastes good, but don’t choke on the pit.

June 1, 1995

Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it will achieve.

Learn everything, believe nothing.

The heart knows the truths that the mind refuses to believe.

October 27, 1995

Reality is the field of dreams.

The journey is only half the fun.

Let the mind rest, listen to the heart.

The mind contemplates, the heart conceives.

Imagine a new world.

The heart goes where the mind cannot.

I walk up a narrow mountain road.
To my right, a sheer mountain wall leads up towards the sun.
To my left is a steep cliff leading far down into the darkness.
Man follows behind me, pulling me further down the mountain road.
I fear that I might fall off to the left.
I begin to follow Man back down the mountain road.
I slip many times, and fear that I might fall.
Behind me, a gentle voice calls out my name.
I turn and face the new speaker up the mountain road.
Son of Man calls my name again, and beckons for me to follow him.
As I watch Son of Man, I start to feel peace.
I start back up the road, forgetting the fear of the cliff to my left.
Man grabs me, and tries to pull me down.
I take my eyes of Son of Man,
Fear returns to my soul.
Son of Man calls my name again.
I look at him, and break free from Man’s grasp.
The fear leaves again, I continue to follow Son of Man.
Man continues to try and drag me down.
Son of Man continues to call me up.
I keep my eyes on Son of Man.
I work my way up the mountain.

A Great and Holy City lay before me.
Twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl.
And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.
I look into my own sinful heart.
On my own, I know I could never enter this Holy City.
For, There shall by no means enter the City anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie.
As I know, There is none righteous, no, not one.
I turn around to see my just reward.
The lake which burns with fire and brimstone,
Which is the second death.
For as I well know, the wages of sin is death.
I look then to the gift which I hold in my hands.
The record of my sins and transgressions,
Wiped clean, by the Blood of the Lamb.
For by grace I have been saved through faith, and that not of myself;
Because the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I turn back around and enter the Holy City,
The New Jerusalem.

I find myself alone,
A dark forest surrounds me.
Strange sounds fill the darkness,
Voices whisper to me in the icy winds.
Fear fills my soul,
Not knowing what to do.
In desperation I cry out to the Lord.
A way of light pierces the darkness.
The Lord has revealed to me the true way.
The way is not easy.
Many times am I tempted to return to the dark.
I have only begun,
I do not know how rough the way may yet become.
I follow it by faith,
For I have no where else to go.

One day I spoke with the Lord.
I asked Him,
“Lord,
Is it possible that I might have a new mother?
For I grow weary of the one You have chosen for me.”
The Lord looked at me calmly.
“Very well, my child,”
He answered.
“Describe to me,
The mother you wish to have.”
I smiled broadly and began to speak.
“My mother would be kind.
She must display her love for me
Without anything asked in return.
She must enjoy doing things with me,
That I might enjoy the time with her.
She must teach me right and wrong,
Never allowing me to stray away.
She must be there when I need the support,
As well as when I deserve the praise.”
The Lord smiled.
“If you look behind you,
You shall see the mother you have chosen.”
I turned around and saw the mother I described.
“You see, my child,”
The Lord replied,
“I provided for you well.
The mother you described was the one I had chosen for you.”

I tread carefully,
Through the Valley of Darkness,
A narrow Path,
My only Guide.
All around me,
Voices echo soothingly through the Shadows.
They offer me Fame and Fortune.
They offer me Pride and Pleasure.
I need only to follow the Voices.
I need only to enter the Darkness.

I tread carefully,
Through the Valley of Darkness.
I begin to stray,
Farther into the Darkness.
The Darkness chills my Soul.
From the Shadows,
My Fears manifest.
The soothing Voices call out,
Beckoning me farther in.
The Voices tell me
They are my Friends.

I tread carefully,
Through the Valley of Darkness.
The Man of Love calls to me.
He asks me to return,
To the narrow Path.
The Voices order me not to listen.
The Man of Love calls out,
He offers Himself to the Voices.
The Voices scorn Him,
They order me to do the same.

I tread carefully,
Through the Valley of Darkness.
The Man of Love comes to me,
“It is for you,
That I do thus.”
The Man of Love dies.
The Voices of Darkness flee.

I tread carefully,
Through the Valley of Darkness.
Two guides I have now.
The narrow Path,
And the Man of Love.

A man stood alone in the darkness.
His feet were glowing softly through the darkness.
“This is the light of humility.”
“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
A slightly brighter light burned forth from the man’s hands.
“This is the light of truth.”
“He who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen.”
From the man’s head shone an even brighter light.
This light was almost as bright as daylight.
“This is the light of faith.”
“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
A light brighter than the light of the sun blazed brightly from the man’s side.
“This is the light of love.”
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.”
“Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
The man extended his arms and lowered his head.
The darkness dissolved, leaving only the light.

The Enemy cautiously stalks The Prey.
It moves in complete silence,
And with absolute secrecy.
The Enemy reaches for The Prey
With hands as cold as Death.
The Prey shivers with the cold.
The Enemy searches inside The Prey.
The Prey is cold with an unknown fear.
The Enemy removes a Piece of The Prey.
Victorious, The Enemy flees with stealth.
The Prey is empty without that Piece.
Fear and Sadness fill the Void.
The Prey heals.
Soon The Enemy will return.
Will The Prey be ready?

I lay on the cool, green grass.
The small, soft blades feeling like soothing needles, relaxing my muscles.
I watch as the cotton clouds form ever-changing pictures in the deep blue sky.
A crisp, clean breeze rolled over me.
My weary body is comforted.
I feel at peace.

The day moved slowly along.
The shadows crept cautiously across the land.
I watched as the sky changed color.
The sky was on fire.
All clouds, save one, fled from sight.
I watched as the single red-orange cloud slowly changed shape.
A cross on a hill.
I did not loose the meaning.

The sky grew dark.
The cloud vanished in the blackness.
The silvery white glow of the full moon, lit the darkened earth.
The cloud, a mere shadow in the dark sky, slowly crept through the sky.
The cloud move in front of the moon.
Such a glorious sight.
The cross seemed to shine on me.
My weary soul is comforted.
I am at peace.

The cloud moved on, into the night.
The image remained burned into my heart.
Never will I forget the sight I have seen.
Never will I forget the peace that I felt.
I can always return to the peace.
